Global Peace Index
One of Europe's safest countries
The Czech Republic (officially Czechia) sits at the heart of Europe and delivers one of the continent's most compelling expat packages: Prague's UNESCO-listed Old Town and world-class café culture, a genuine Digital Nomad Visa, a flat 15% income tax, and monthly costs 40–60% below London or Amsterdam. The exchange rate stands at approximately 21 CZK per US dollar in March 2026. A reformed Digital Nomad Program (expanded 2025) accepts IT and marketing professionals from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and 10+ other countries. The July 2024 immigration reforms eliminated the labour market test for Employee Card applicants from nine key nationalities. For EU citizens, the Czech Republic offers unrestricted residency with access to the public VZP health insurance system. Registered partnership law, signed April 2024 and effective January 2025, granted same-sex couples near-equal rights to married couples. The Czech Republic ranks 11th on the Global Peace Index 2025 — one of Europe's safest countries.
Why Expats Choose Czech Republic
Most beautiful capital in Central Europe
Prague's UNESCO-listed Old Town, Charles Bridge, the Prague Castle complex, and an unbroken skyline of Gothic, Baroque, Art Nouveau, and Cubist architecture make it one of the world's most visually extraordinary cities — and you can live here for under $2,000/month.
EU access at emerging-market prices
EU membership gives you access to 26 other countries for free travel and business. Yet Czech prices are 40–60% below Western Europe. A pub dinner costs $7–$12, a monthly transport pass $28.60, and a great beer in a local hospoda $2.60–$3.80.
World's highest beer consumption — and world's best
Czech Republic holds the world record for per-capita beer consumption (~130 litres/person/year). Czech lager — Pilsner Urquell, Budvar, Bernard — is the original Pilsner style, and a half-litre in a neighbourhood pub costs CZK 55–80 (~$2.60–$3.80).
Digital Nomad Visa and thriving tech scene
A dedicated Digital Nomad Visa (expanded 2025) is available to IT and marketing professionals from 15+ countries. Prague and Brno host major tech employers: Red Hat, Oracle, IBM, Kiwi.com, Productboard. Fibre internet averages 106 Mbps. Over 40 coworking spaces in Prague alone.
Ideal base for European travel
Prague is within 4–4.5 hours by train to Vienna and Berlin, and a short flight to all major European cities. RegioJet and LEO Express provide fast, affordable intercity rail with Wi-Fi. Czech Airlines and Wizz Air/Ryanair routes from PRG are extensive.
High-quality healthcare at low cost
The mandatory public VZP health insurance system covers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care. From January 2026, even white dental fillings are covered. Private English-speaking clinics (Canadian Medical, Medicover) are available in Prague for CZK 1,500–3,500 per visit — dental implants from CZK 15,000 ($714) vs $4,000+ in the USA.

Everything You Need to Know
In-depth guides on every aspect of expat life in Czech Republic
Visa & Residency
Czech Republic is a Schengen Zone member, allowing visa-free entry for US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand citizens for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Long-stay options include a Digital Nomad Visa (expanded 2025, for IT/marketing professionals earning CZK 69,836+/month from a non-Czech employer), an Employee Card (labour market test eliminated from July 2024 for 9 nationalities), an EU Blue Card (salary threshold CZK 69,248/month), and a Živno Visa for freelancers. Permanent Residency requires 5 years of continuous legal stay plus an A2 Czech language test. EU citizens simply register for a Residence Certificate within 90 days.
Healthcare
Czech Republic operates a mandatory public health insurance system funded by employer and employee contributions. The dominant insurer is VZP (Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna), which covers GP visits, specialists, hospital stays, surgery, and — from January 2026 — white dental fillings. Non-EU expats on visas before achieving long-term residence must use private commercial insurance (PVZP, CZK 2,188–3,306/month). Prague's hospitals meet EU standards; English-speaking private clinics (Canadian Medical, Medicover) offer convenient access with short wait times. Czech dental care is significantly cheaper than Western Europe.
Cost of Living
Czech Republic offers a straightforward and competitive tax environment: 15% income tax on earnings up to ~CZK 1.76 million/year (~$84,000 USD), rising to 23% above that. Self-employed freelancers (OSVČ) can deduct 60% of revenue as expenses, resulting in an effective tax rate of just 6% on gross income. VAT is 21% (standard) and 12% (reduced). The koruna is not the euro — Czech Republic has its own currency — which contributes to lower costs than eurozone neighbours. Banking is excellent: Fio banka and Air Bank are the top choices for expats with zero monthly fees. The Paušální daň (flat-rate tax) regime simplifies self-employment contributions to a single monthly payment of CZK 7,498.
Housing
Prague is Central & Eastern Europe's priciest rental market — a 1BR in Vinohrady or Karlín costs CZK 22,000–28,000/month ($1,048–$1,333). Brno is 22% cheaper (CZK 15,000–20,000), making it excellent value with a high quality of life. Standard leases are 12 months with a 2–3 month deposit. Rental contracts are in Czech — use a relocation agent or certified translator. The main listing platforms are Bezrealitky.cz (direct from landlords), Reality.iDnes.cz, and Sreality.cz. Competition for well-located flats is fierce; ideally view and sign within 24–48 hours of listing. Prague's best expat neighbourhoods — Vinohrady, Karlín, Holešovice, Žižkov — combine walkability, excellent cafés, and direct metro or tram access.
Work & Business
Czech Republic has the lowest unemployment rate in the EU (consistently under 4%) and a severe skills shortage in IT, engineering, and finance — creating genuine demand for qualified expats. Prague hosts African headquarters of major tech companies: Red Hat, Oracle, IBM, Kiwi.com, Productboard, Avast (NortonLifeLock), and dozens of multinational shared services centres. Brno is a growing tech hub. The trade licence (živnostenský list) system enables fast, low-cost freelance setup for IT and creative professionals. Czech average wage is ~CZK 46,200/month (~$2,200 USD) but senior tech professionals earn CZK 120,000–180,000/month ($5,714–$8,571).
Daily Life
Daily life in Czech Republic is highly functional and enjoyable. The public transport network — especially Prague's integrated metro, tram, and bus system — is excellent and very cheap (monthly unlimited pass CZK 600, ~$28.60). Czech cities are walkable and cycle-friendly. Supermarkets stock extensive European and Czech produce. Czech pub culture (hospoda) is the social fabric of daily life, and the world's cheapest good beer is a daily reality. English is widely spoken in Prague and Brno, especially among those under 40. Czech Republic ranks 11th on the Global Peace Index 2025 — pickpocketing in tourist areas is the main safety concern.
Moving Guide
Czech Republic is an EU member — which makes moving from other EU countries straightforward with no customs or pet restrictions beyond the EU PETS passport. Moving from the USA, UK, Canada, or Australia requires more planning: a Schengen-compliant entry, the Digital Nomad Visa application (90–120 days processing), PVZP health insurance, and pet import documentation (microchip + rabies + titer test for some countries). Driver's licences from non-EU countries can be exchanged for a Czech licence with only a theory test (practical waived from 2024). Household goods from non-EU countries are duty-free if used for 12+ months and imported within 12 months of establishing Czech residence.
Education
Czech Republic has Africa's — Europe's — highest-ranking university in Charles University (Prague), founded in 1348 and ranked 265th globally (QS 2026). International schools in Prague offer IB, British IGCSE/A-Levels, and American curricula at CZK 220,000–425,000/year ($10,500–$20,200). The public school system is Czech-medium and free — excellent for young children who adapt to language quickly. Brno's Masaryk University and Czech Technical University (ČVUT) are strong in technology, natural sciences, and engineering. Tuition for non-EU international students at Czech public universities is €3,500–€7,100/year — a fraction of UK or US equivalents.
Lifestyle
Czech Republic's lifestyle is centred on extraordinary architecture, world-class beer, rich classical music heritage, excellent skiing in the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), and some of Europe's most beautiful weekend trip destinations (Český Krumlov, Kutná Hora, Olomouc). Prague consistently ranks in the top 5 most beautiful European cities. The summer festival season — Prague Spring Music Festival, Colours of Ostrava, Metronome Festival — is exceptional. Czech cuisine is hearty and affordable in local restaurants. The country's central position means Vienna, Berlin, Budapest, and Kraków are all day trips or overnight trains away.
