Food, Coffee, and Nightlife
Norway's reputation for bland food is outdated. Oslo in particular has a restaurant scene that competes with Copenhagen and Stockholm — world-class Nordic cuisine built on exceptional local ingredients, outstanding coffee culture, and a growing international food scene in cities with significant immigrant communities.
- Maaemo (Oslo): Norway's only three-Michelin-star restaurant; pure Nordic tasting menu; one of Europe's most acclaimed dining experiences
- Mathallen Oslo (Grünerløkka): indoor food market with 30+ artisan producers — best concentration of quality Norwegian food producers
- Fisketorget (Bergen): Bergen's Fish Market — fresh Atlantic salmon, king crab, shrimp, and smoked whale (for the adventurous)
- Coffee: Norwegians consume more coffee per capita than any other country; Tim Wendelboe (Oslo) is among the world's most celebrated specialty coffee roasters
- Nightlife: Oslo's nightlife is concentrated around Grünerløkka, Aker Brygge, and Youngstorget — bars open until 3am on weekends
- Bergen nightlife: more intimate; concentrated around Bryggen and Ole Bulls plass
- Last orders: most bars and clubs serve until 3am; 24-hour party culture does not exist as it does in Southern Europe
