Healthcare System Overview
Laos has a developing healthcare system that is improving but still falls short of international standards for most services. Public hospitals are underfunded and understaffed, with limited English-speaking staff and outdated equipment. Private clinics in Vientiane offer better care, and the Kasemrad International Hospital (operated by a Thai hospital chain) provides the closest thing to international-standard care. For anything beyond basic treatment, most expats evacuate to Thailand — Udon Thani is 1.5 hours from Vientiane, and Bangkok is a 1-hour flight.
- Public healthcare: free for Lao citizens, very basic, not recommended for expats except in emergencies
- Private clinics: better equipped, English-speaking staff available, affordable by Western standards
- Kasemrad International Hospital: Laos's newest and most advanced hospital, Thai-operated
- Dental care: basic services available in Vientiane; complex procedures better done in Thailand
- Pharmacy: many medications available over-the-counter at low prices; quality varies
- Medical evacuation: essential component of any expat health insurance plan in Laos
