Education

Education in Laos is a mixed picture. The public school system teaches in Lao and is not suitable for most expat children. Vientiane has several established international schools offering English-medium education to a decent standard, though the range and quality doesn't compare to Bangkok, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur. Luang Prabang has very limited options. Many expat families with school-age children choose Vientiane specifically for its international school cluster.

Vientiane's international school scene is small but covers the main needs. The Vientiane International School (VIS) is the most established and well-regarded, offering an American curriculum. The Lao-ITECC International School offers British curriculum, and the French school (Lycée Josué Hoffet) serves the Francophone community. Fees are lower than equivalent schools in Bangkok or Singapore.

Higher education in Laos is limited. The National University of Laos (NUOL) in Vientiane is the country's main university, offering some programs in English. For serious higher education, most expats and Lao students go to Thailand, Vietnam, or further abroad. Language learning — both Lao and English — is more relevant for most expats.

Homeschooling is a viable and increasingly popular option for expat families in Laos, particularly those living in Luang Prabang where international school options don't exist. Online curricula, co-op learning groups with other expat families, and the cultural richness of living in Laos itself make it an attractive alternative to traditional schooling.
