The Four Seasons and UK Weather
Understanding and embracing the UK's variable, rainy-but-mild climate is essential to enjoying life here. The seasons each have their own character and associated cultural events.
- Spring (Mar–May): mild, increasingly sunny, long daylight hours returning; cherry blossoms in London's parks, daffodils in the countryside; Easter bank holiday
- Summer (Jun–Aug): warm (20–28°C in England, 15–23°C in Scotland), long days (up to 17 hours in midsummer in Scotland); Wimbledon (July), Glastonbury, the Proms begin; Scots head to the Highlands
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): beautiful foliage, crisp air, early darkness; Edinburgh Fringe wraps up, Bonfire Night (5 November) is a UK-wide event with fireworks
- Winter (Dec–Feb): cold (2–8°C), short days (8 hours light in December), frequent grey skies; Christmas markets in Edinburgh, Manchester, Bath; pub culture at its cosiest
- UV index is low year-round — Vitamin D supplements are recommended by the NHS for all UK residents, particularly from October to March
- Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects some people — lightboxes, outdoor exercise, and social connection are effective mitigations
