Essential First Steps on Arrival
Get your tax number first — it unlocks everything else (banking, utilities, residence permit, phone contract). The Turkish bureaucratic system is improving but still requires patience; having a bilingual fixer or lawyer for the first month is worth the cost.
- Vergi numarası (tax number): any Vergi Dairesi (tax office) in Turkey — just your passport; takes 15 minutes; no residence permit required
- Bank account: major banks (İş Bankası, Garanti BBVA, Akbank) — need passport, tax number, and proof of address
- Ikamet application: apply online at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr before your 90-day visa-free period expires
- Private health insurance: required from day 1 for ikamet application; get this before or immediately on arrival
- Notarised lease: have your landlord meet you at a notary (noter) to notarise your rental contract — needed for ikamet
- SIM card: Turkcell, Türk Telekom, and Vodafone Turkey — purchase with passport at official stores; 90-day tourist SIM then register with residence permit
