Food and Dining
Tajik cuisine is hearty, meat-heavy, and deeply influenced by Persian and Central Asian traditions. Dining out is extremely affordable.
- Plov (rice pilaf): the national dish; variations include qurutob (yogurt-based) and shashlik (grilled meat)
- Local meals: $3–$7 at traditional restaurants; mid-range international dining $15–$25
- Bazaars sell fresh fruit, nuts, bread (non), and dairy at very low prices — Mehrgon Bazaar in Dushanbe is the largest
- Vegetarian options are limited in traditional cuisine — bazaars and home cooking are your best options
- International restaurants in Dushanbe: Indian, Turkish, Chinese, Korean — prices remain very affordable
- Tea culture is central to daily life — every interaction begins and ends with tea (choy)
