Education System Overview
Suriname's education system is based on the Dutch model, with Dutch as the medium of instruction at all levels. Education is compulsory from ages 7 to 12, covering primary school (GLO). Secondary education is divided into junior (VOJ) and senior (VOS) levels. While public education is free, quality varies significantly between urban and rural areas. Most expat families opt for private or international schools in Paramaribo.
- Primary school (GLO): ages 7–12, 6 years — Dutch-language instruction
- Junior secondary (VOJ): ages 12–16, 4 years — academic and vocational tracks
- Senior secondary (VOS): ages 16–18, 2 years — preparation for university or vocational training
- Public schools: free but quality varies — best schools are in central Paramaribo
- Private schools: better resourced, smaller class sizes — $500–$2,000/year
- International schools: English-language curriculum — $5,000–$12,000/year
