Sri Lanka punches spectacularly above its weight for outdoor experiences. The variety packed into an island the size of Ireland is genuinely remarkable.
- Surfing: Weligama Bay (beginners), Ahangama, Midigama, and Hikkaduwa (intermediate/advanced); world-class season October–April on the south coast
- Whale watching: blue whales and sperm whales off Mirissa and Trincomalee — among the best whale watching in the world; season November–April
- Yala National Park: highest leopard density of any national park in the world; also elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears; 3 hours from Colombo

- Temple circuit: Sigiriya Rock Fortress (UNESCO), Dambulla Cave Temple (UNESCO), Temple of the Tooth (Kandy) — ancient history on your doorstep
- Highland train journey: Ella–Kandy route considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world
