Moving to Myanmar requires more advance planning than Thailand, Vietnam, or Malaysia due to the political situation and limited infrastructure. The single most important preparation is securing employment — this provides visa sponsorship, housing assistance, security support, and an immediate community. Without employer support, navigating Myanmar's bureaucracy and logistics is significantly more challenging.

The first week is about orientation, paperwork, and getting your bearings. Most employers provide an orientation program including a security briefing, neighbourhood tour, and introduction to key contacts. If arriving independently, plan to stay in a hotel or serviced apartment while you get settled. The Yangon expat community is welcoming — reach out through Facebook groups and expat clubs.

Myanmar's consumer market has improved since the telecom revolution of 2014, but imported goods remain expensive and selection is limited. The general rule: bring anything specialized or brand-specific from home; buy everyday items locally. Yangon's City Mart and Marketplace supermarkets stock many imported products, though at 2–3× the price of their home countries.

Myanmar's bureaucratic requirements for foreigners are relatively manageable if your employer is handling the heavy lifting. The key tasks are registration, bank account (if needed), and familiarizing yourself with essential services. Most international organizations have admin staff dedicated to helping expats navigate these processes.
