Kyrgyzstan is still largely a cash economy, though digital payments are growing rapidly in Bishkek. The Kyrgyzstani Som (KGS) trades at roughly 89 KGS = 1 USD.
- Cash is essential — many shops, marshrutkas, and bazaars accept only cash
- ATMs are widespread in Bishkek and accept Visa/Mastercard (fees ~$1–$3 per withdrawal)
- MBank is a popular mobile banking app — can be used for transfers and some payments
- Wise (TransferWise) works for international transfers to Kyrgyz bank accounts
- KICB and Optima Bank are the most expat-friendly banks
- Currency exchange offices (обменники) offer competitive rates throughout Bishkek
- Cryptocurrency is in a legal grey area but some expats use it for transfers
