Botswana's immigration system is relatively straightforward compared to many African nations. Most Western passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 90 days. For longer stays, you'll need either a work permit (sponsored by an employer) or a residence permit. There is no freelancer or digital nomad visa, so remote workers typically enter on tourist status and renew every 90 days or secure a work permit through a local entity.

The work permit is the most common pathway for expats in Botswana, governed by the Employment of Non-Citizens Act. Your employer must demonstrate that no qualified Botswana citizen is available for the role. Processing takes 10–12 weeks after submission of complete documentation, and permits are granted for the requested period up to 5 years.

If you're not working in Botswana but wish to live here — as a retiree, dependent spouse, or person of independent means — you'll need a residence permit. Applications must be supported by a person on whom you'll depend financially while in Botswana, or by proof of sufficient personal funds.

Securing a Botswana work permit requires coordination between you and your employer. Allow 3–4 months from job offer to permit approval. Using an immigration consultant ($500–$1,500) can help navigate the bureaucracy and ensure correct documentation.
