Arts, Culture, and Museums
Belgium has produced some of the world's most influential artists — from the Flemish Primitives (Van Eyck, Memling, Bosch) to Rubens, Magritte, and Hergé (creator of Tintin). The museum landscape is rich and varied: the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels house an extraordinary collection from the 15th century to the present, the MAS in Antwerp chronicles the city's global connections, and Ghent's SMAK is one of Europe's best contemporary art museums.

Outdoors, Nature, and Weekend Escapes
Belgium's geography divides neatly: flat, agricultural Flanders in the north; the forested hills and river valleys of the Ardennes in the south. The Belgian coast stretches 67km along the North Sea. The country's small size means that every corner is accessible in under 2 hours. European weekend escapes by high-speed train are effortless — Paris, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, and the Rhine Valley are all within 2 hours.
- Belgian Ardennes: forested hills, river kayaking (Lesse, Ourthe), hiking, mountain biking, and WWII battle sites (Battle of the Bulge, Bastogne)
- Belgian coast: 67km of North Sea beaches; Ostend (Victorian resort, seafood), Knokke (upscale), De Panne (nature reserve); Belgian Coast Tram runs the full length
- Hallerbos (Blue Forest): magical bluebell forest near Brussels; spectacular in April–May; popular with photographers and families
- Cycling: Flanders is prime cycling country — flat terrain, excellent paths, and the heritage of cycling legends (Eddy Merckx); Tour of Flanders route is rideable year-round
- Weekend by train: Paris (1h 22m), Amsterdam (1h 50m), Luxembourg City (3h), Cologne (1h 50m), London (2h) — all effortless day or weekend trips
- Spa (Wallonia): the original spa town that gave the word to the world; thermal baths, Spa-Francorchamps F1 circuit, and Ardennes walking trails

Food, Drink, and Culinary Heritage
Belgian gastronomy operates at a level that most countries simply cannot match for a population of 11.8 million. The beer culture is UNESCO-recognised. The chocolate industry is a global benchmark. Michelin-starred restaurants are denser per capita than in France. And everyday food — frites from a friterie, a croque-monsieur from a café, a waffle from a street stand — is consistently excellent in a way that reflects deep national pride in food.
- Beer pilgrimages: visit Cantillon brewery (Brussels, lambic), Westvleteren abbey (appointment-only, world's best Trappist), and the Bruges Beer Experience
- Chocolate tours: Pierre Marcolini (Brussels), Dominique Persoone (The Chocolate Line, Bruges and Antwerp), Laurent Gerbaud, and Mary Chocolatier (Royal Warrant holder)
- Friteries: Maison Antoine (Brussels), Frites Atelier (Antwerp), and De Smulpaap (Ghent) — Belgian frites are double-fried in beef tallow, not the same as French fries
- Michelin dining: Hof van Cleve (3 stars, East Flanders), Bon Bon (2 stars, Brussels), The Jane (2 stars, Antwerp, in a former chapel)
- Regional specialities: stoemp (mashed potato with vegetables, Brussels), waterzooi (creamy stew, Ghent), carbonnade flamande (beef and beer stew), speculoos biscuits
- Market culture: weekend markets are central to Belgian life — Grand Sablon antique market (Brussels), Groentenmarkt (Ghent), and the Antwerp Saturday market

Sports, Recreation, and Active Life
Belgium is a passionate sporting nation. Football (soccer) is the national sport — the Belgian Red Devils have been a top-10 FIFA team for over a decade. Cycling is deeply embedded in Flemish culture — the Spring Classics (Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège) are among cycling's most prestigious races. Tennis has produced global stars (Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, David Goffin). And the Spa-Francorchamps circuit hosts Formula 1's Belgian Grand Prix.
- Football: Club Brugge, RSC Anderlecht, and KRC Genk compete in the Jupiler Pro League; attending a match is an excellent cultural experience
- Cycling: Spring Classics season (March–April) turns Flanders into cycling's global centre; sportives allow amateurs to ride the professional routes
- Formula 1: Spa-Francorchamps hosts the Belgian Grand Prix; one of F1's most dramatic and historic circuits
- Tennis: Belgium has produced multiple Grand Slam champions; tennis clubs are plentiful and excellent for social sport
- Running: Brussels Marathon (October), Antwerp 10 Miles (April), and numerous city runs throughout the year
- Fitness: Basic-Fit, JIMS, and independent gyms throughout all cities; €20–€40/month for standard membership

LGBTQ+ Life and Diversity
Belgium was the second country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage (2003) and has strong legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. Brussels, as the EU capital, is exceptionally diverse and inclusive. Antwerp has a vibrant LGBTQ+ nightlife scene. Belgium consistently scores in the top 5 of European LGBTQ+ equality indices.
- Same-sex marriage: legal since 2003 — Belgium was the second country worldwide after the Netherlands
- Anti-discrimination: comprehensive legal protections covering employment, housing, goods, and services; enforced by UNIA (equality body)
- Brussels Pride: annual parade in May; growing in size and visibility each year
- Antwerp: the Rainbow city — active LGBTQ+ nightlife scene around the city centre; Antwerp Pride in August
